Timeless interior design is not based on the yearly fads. Instead, it thrives on simplicity and functionality to create a cohesive balance. Our client is a single, working professional who owns a 2 bedroom HDB apartment. As an introvert who enjoys time alone, he wanted a home that emulate the best aspects of hotel interior to give him a hotel-at-home feeling. A cosy and intimate space that would stand the test of time. One which would evoke a serene atmosphere to help him recharge from the day.

With these requirements in mind, we decided to create a stylish laidback luxe design, one that would become a retreat from stress.

Are you ready for our home renovation journey? Let's get started and into it!

Here are the key features of this 2 Room HDB 1. Full height feature wall backsplash without top hung cabinet at Kitchen

2. Full height fluted panel at Living area

3. Made-to-size Curved sofa 1. Full height feature wall backsplash without top hung cabinet in Kitchen

The focal point of the kitchen is definitely the sintered stone backsplash. Not only it gives a sense of elegance, the availability in large format sizes with a wide range of custom appearance, coupled with ease of maintenance were some of the reasons for choosing sintered stones as the backsplash for the kitchen. Grey laminated lower cabinets ground the space while the sintered stone backsplash framed by laminated walnut paneling add a touch of elegance to the space. We do away with top cabinet to avoid overwhelming the compact kitchen.

Here's a look of how the kitchen look like before all the carpentry were up.

The end result is exactly what we envisioned. and how different types of color flows together cohesively.

2. Full height fluted panel at Living area

Limited by dimensions due to a tiny bedroom and an elongated living room were some of the constraints we faced when designing this compact apartment. We felt that the best design strategy we could go for to tackle these constraints was to combine the living room and bedroom into one larger open space; yet recreating this space for more than one purpose effectively and stylishly by bringing down the ceilings of the living room with false ceiling to create a different sense of space Shoe porch and living area. One of our ideas was to make the walls as one of the focal points in the living area by using custom made walnut flute wall panels. These paneling creates a cozy and intimate ambience with a sense of class which further enhance the theme of our design. It also gives helps to gives an illusion of elevated ceiling so it doesn’t feel like a standard HDB ceiling height.

Here's a look of how the walls between 2 areas were torn down.

How the ceiling at the entrance was stylishly brought down to create a different yet inviting space in the living area.

After image of how fluted panels can really create a sense of elongation and makes the ceiling feels higher.

3. Made-to-size Curved sofa

In the area of furnishing, we custom made furniture to make the most of each nook and cranny because we do not want to lose the appeal of fine furniture in a small space. Furniture which was custom made were a grey study/dining table which also doubles up as a working desk and a coffee table. Part of our design strategy was to use large furnishings in a small space to create the illusion of a room with grandeur, in this case, a large rotatable LED TV to share between spaces and a chic sofa as some of the anchor items to delineate space.

We deliberate over the choice of lighting because our client wanted minimum natural lights in the house except bathroom, due to a west facing bedroom and living room which makes the house overly bright and hot most part of the day. This was one of the reasons which influence our choice to use solid Neutral-grey coloured blackout curtain for additional light and temperature control, at the same time providing sufficient privacy. With working from home is here to stay, our client also wanted the flexibility of altering lighting to suit the task/time of the day, giving him the possibility of having a bright working environment during working hours and a relaxing evening mood at the end of the day. A mixture of ambient, task and accent lights were used. For most part of the house, we use downlights to gently wash the walls, curtain, and furniture with warm, functional brightness. 2 low energy consumption dropdown pendent lights were used over the dining/working table to provide added lighting for study/ guide light during the night while also being a statement accent piece. We chose 2 dimmable circle embedded bedside sconce to set the scene for a well-lit bedroom and for bedside reading. These sconces bring a soft glow to the room making it cosy and appealing.

Throughout the course of designing and planning, down to the actual execution, we were very focus in creating an interior which matched that of a hotel’s luxe interior aesthetics to meet our client’s dream of having a hotel-at-Home.
